Garden Route
Day trips from Wilderness: Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay and more
Wilderness sits in the middle of the Garden Route, so almost everything is a day trip. Eight itineraries, with drive times, what to do and where to eat.

Every trip below starts and ends at our door, and none needs more than two hours in the car.

In diesem Guide
One of the quiet advantages of staying in Wilderness is that you never have to pack. The village sits almost exactly in the middle of the Garden Route: Mossel Bay is 45 minutes west, Knysna 45 minutes east, the Klein Karoo an hour north over the mountains. Here are eight days out, each easy to do and be home for sunset.
Drive times are approximate from our cottages on the ridge above Wilderness and assume no roadworks, which on the N2 is optimistic.
1. Sedgefield: the Saturday market and a fossil headland
25 minutes east
Sedgefield calls itself a "slow town", and it means it. Go on a Saturday for the Wild Oats Community Farmers Market (from 07:30 to about noon): organic vegetables, bread, cheese, pies, coffee and live music. Then walk along the beach to Gericke's Point, a headland of fossilised dunes with rock pools, and watch the paragliders overhead. On the way home, stop at Swartvlei, the largest of the Wilderness lakes, and at Timberlake Organic Village.
2. Knysna: the Heads, the lagoon and the forest
45 minutes east
Start at the Knysna Heads, the two sandstone cliffs at the mouth of the lagoon, with a viewpoint on the East Head. Take the ferry across to the private Featherbed Nature Reserve for a guided walk on the western head. Lunch on oysters at the Waterfront or on Thesen Island (see our restaurant guide). In the afternoon, drive into the Knysna forest at Diepwalle for a walk among giant yellowwoods. If you are curious about the town beyond the waterfront, book a community-run tour (see travel that gives back).

3. Plettenberg Bay: Robberg, whales and wine
About 1 hour 15 minutes east
Start early with the Robberg peninsula circuit (about 9 km) before the heat and the crowds, with Cape fur seals and huge sea views. From June to November, join a licensed whale watching boat from Central Beach (see whale watching). Finish with a long lunch at a Plett wine farm, where cool-climate sparkling wine is the speciality. With children, swap the wine farm for Birds of Eden and Monkeyland at the Crags.
4. Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves: over the mountains
About 1 hour to Oudtshoorn, 1 hour 30 to the caves
This is the most dramatic day out. Drive north over the Outeniqua Pass and within half an hour the green coast gives way to the dry, open Klein Karoo. Book a tour of the Cango Caves, the most famous show caves in Africa: the Heritage Tour walks through great halls of dripstone; the Adventure Tour squeezes through tunnels and chimneys (not for the claustrophobic, and not for children under six). Visit an ostrich farm, have lunch in Oudtshoorn, and come home over the gravel Montagu Pass, finished in 1847 and the oldest unaltered pass in South Africa. See the mountain passes guide.
Tip: the weather is often completely different on each side of the mountains. When it rains on the coast, the Karoo is often sunny.

5. Mossel Bay: 160,000 years of human history
About 45 minutes west
Book the Point of Human Origins tour at Pinnacle Point, where caves hold some of the earliest evidence of modern human behaviour, around 160,000 years old. In town, the Dias Museum has a full-size replica of Bartolomeu Dias's caravel (he landed here in 1488) and the Post Office Tree. Walk part of the St Blaize Trail along the cliffs, then eat seafood at Café Gannet or, on the way home, at the open-air De Vette Mossel in Groot Brak.
6. George: trains, gardens and golf
About 15 minutes west
The region's biggest town is easy to overlook, but worth a morning. The Outeniqua Transport Museum houses steam locomotives, including the ones that pulled the Choo Tjoe, plus old cars and carriages. The Garden Route Botanical Garden shows off local fynbos and forest plants. Golfers know George for Fancourt, one of South Africa's best-known golf estates. In summer, pick your own berries at Redberry Farm.
7. Tsitsikamma: bridges, bungee and the Otter Trail
About 2 hours east
A long but spectacular day. Drive past Plett to the Bloukrans Bridge, where you can watch (or do) the 216 m bungee jump. Continue to Storms River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma section of the national park: walk the boardwalk to the suspension bridge over the river mouth, and if you have energy, the first section of the Otter Trail to a waterfall on the beach. On the way back, stop at Nature's Valley for a swim in the lagoon.
8. A Big Five safari near Mossel Bay
About 1 hour 15 minutes west
The Garden Route is not Big Five country in the wild, but private reserves in the hills near Mossel Bay, such as Gondwana and Botlierskop, offer game drives with lions, elephants, rhinos and more on fenced, malaria-free land. It is not the Kruger, but it is a good taste of safari. Book in advance. For the real thing, the new direct flight from George to Hoedspruit makes the Kruger area easy (see what's new in 2026).
