Kayak to the waterfall: the Touw River and the kingfisher trails of Wilderness
Paddle upstream through a forested gorge, tie up the boat, walk a boardwalk to a waterfall and swim in the pool beneath it. The best half day in Wilderness, and you do not need a guide.

The Touw River launch is about 10 minutes' drive from our cottages.
Kurz gesagt
In Wilderness on the Garden Route you can hire a kayak or canoe at the Touw River, paddle about 40 minutes upstream through the Garden Route National Park, then walk roughly 2.5 km on the Giant Kingfisher Trail and boardwalks to a waterfall with rock pools. Allow three to four hours in total. Alternatively, walk the Half-collared Kingfisher Trail (7 to 8 km return, about three hours) from Ebb and Flow rest camp. A SANParks conservation fee applies; from 1 November 2026 it is R270 per international adult for the Wilderness section.

In diesem Guide
The Touw River is a dark river. Tannins from the forest stain it the colour of rooibos tea, and on a still morning it holds a perfect mirror of the trees on both banks. You paddle into that reflection, the town sounds fade behind the first bend, and for the next few hours the only noise is the dip of the paddle, the odd splash of a fish and the call of a Knysna turaco somewhere up in the canopy.
This is the classic Wilderness half day, and it is one of the best things to do on the whole Garden Route.
How it works
- Hire a kayak or canoe at the Touw River in Wilderness. Local operators such as Eden Adventures rent boats from a launch site near the Fairy Knowe Hotel, and the SANParks rest camp at Ebb and Flow also has canoe hire.
- Paddle upstream for about 40 minutes. The water is flat, the current is gentle and there is no navigation to speak of: follow the river into the forest.
- Tie up at the landing and walk the rest of the way on the Giant Kingfisher Trail, about 2.5 km of forest path and boardwalk.
- Reach the waterfall, where the Touw tumbles over rock into a pool. Swim, picnic, rest.
- Walk and paddle back. The return trip is easier, and many people let the boat drift for a while.
Allow three to four hours in total, more if you linger at the falls.

The kingfisher trails
The Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park names its walks after the five kingfisher species found here: brown-hooded, malachite, giant, pied and half-collared. You can reach the waterfall without a boat.
| Trail | Distance | Time | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half-collared Kingfisher | 7 to 8 km return | 3 to 3.5 h | Forest, river, pontoon crossing, waterfall |
| Giant Kingfisher | about 7 km return from Ebb and Flow | 3 to 4 h | Boardwalks, forest, waterfall and pools |
| Brown-hooded Kingfisher | about 4 km | 2 to 3 h | Shady forest path to the river, good birding |
| Pied Kingfisher | 10 km circuit | 3 to 4 h | Flat and open along the river and beach, little shade |
| Cape Dune Molerat | 6 km circuit | 2 to 3 h | Sandy, through fynbos |
The Half-collared Kingfisher Trail starts near Ebb and Flow rest camp, crosses the Touw on a hand-operated pontoon and follows the river through indigenous forest to the waterfall. It was closed for a while after storms raised the river in 2026 and reopened in July 2026. SANParks advises sturdy shoes, as sections are slippery after rain.
Distances vary slightly between sources; check the trail boards at Ebb and Flow on the day.
What you might see
The forest along the Touw is home to the Knysna turaco with its flash of crimson wing, black-headed orioles, African fish eagles and all five kingfishers. Bushbuck move quietly through the undergrowth, and you may see the tracks of Cape clawless otters on the sandbanks. The trees include Outeniqua and real yellowwoods, some of them centuries old. Our wildlife guide explains what to look for.

Tips
- Go early. Mornings are calmer, cooler and quieter. In December and January the river is busy by late morning.
- Waterproof your valuables. Operators provide splash-proof buckets. Use them for your phone and car keys.
- Wear shoes that can get wet for the landing and the rocks at the falls.
- Bring water and a snack. There are no shops beyond the launch.
- Check the river after heavy rain. High water can close trails and make the falls dangerous. Ask SANParks or your operator.
- Swim with care in the waterfall pool; rocks are slippery.
- No dogs in the national park.
