Garden Route
The best beaches on the Garden Route, and where it is safe to swim
Long wild strands, sheltered coves, lagoon beaches for small children and one surf break that works almost every day. How to pick the right beach for the day you are having.

Wilderness Beach is 10 minutes below our cottages. Victoria Bay about 15.

In this guide
The Garden Route has more good beaches than it has days in a holiday. The difficulty is choosing: the same coast that gives you a flat, warm lagoon for toddlers also produces heavy shore break and rip currents a few hundred metres away. This guide sorts the best beaches by what they are good for, from west to east.
Before you swim: three rules
- Rip currents are common. On open beaches like Wilderness, water pushed ashore by the waves returns to sea in fast channels. If you are caught, do not swim against it; swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the current, then swim in.
- Swim near lifeguards. In summer and during school holidays, the main beaches have lifeguards on duty. Swim between their flags.
- Lagoons are your friend. Where a river meets the sea there is usually a calm, shallow lagoon. For small children, this is the place.
Wilderness Beach
Best for: long walks, sunsets, wild beauty
Wide, golden and kilometres long, running east from the Touw River mouth with dunes and forest behind it. In June 2026 it was named on the international Corona Beach 100 list of the world's best beaches. Houses stay back behind the dunes, so the beach itself feels untouched.
The surf is serious and rip currents are common; the local tourism map carries a warning about them. Walk, run, watch the paragliders land and swim only near lifeguards in season. For gentle water, the Touw River lagoon at the western end is shallow and sheltered.
From our cottages: about 10 minutes by car, or the forest path down from the Map of Africa. More in our Wilderness guide.

Leentjiesklip
Best for: rock pools and quiet mornings
The rocky western end of Wilderness Beach, near the river mouth, with small coves and pools at low tide. Often empty outside the holidays. See hidden gems in Wilderness.
Victoria Bay
Best for: surfing, a tidal pool, character
A narrow cove between George and Wilderness with one of the most consistent right-hand point breaks in South Africa. Surfers line up year-round; beginners watch from the promenade. On the other side of the bay, a tidal pool and a row of old beach houses on the rocks make it charming for a morning swim. Parking is limited, so go early in summer.
Herold's Bay
Best for: a sheltered family beach near George
West of George, a small, sheltered bay with a sandy beach, tidal pools and a small village. It is one of George's Blue Flag beaches in some years and a good choice when the wind is too strong on the open coast.
Buffalo Bay (Buffels Bay)
Best for: surfing, a long beach walk towards Brenton
Between Sedgefield and Knysna, at the edge of Goukamma Nature Reserve. A small village, a sheltered corner for swimming and a beach that stretches for kilometres towards Brenton-on-Sea. Popular with surfers and paragliders.
Brenton-on-Sea
Best for: dramatic cliffs and space
West of the Knysna Heads, a long beach below high vegetated cliffs. Beautiful in the late afternoon. Swim with care; there are strong currents.

Plettenberg Bay: Robberg 5, Lookout, the Wedge
Best for: Blue Flag swimming, water sports, a proper beach town
Plett has the Garden Route's highest concentration of Blue Flag beaches. In the 2025/26 season six local beaches held full Blue Flag status: Lookout, Robberg 5, The Waves, The Dunes, Singing Kettle and Nature's Valley.
- Robberg 5 lies at the foot of the Robberg peninsula and is sheltered and lifeguarded in season.
- Lookout Beach sits where the Keurbooms lagoon meets the bay. Good for families, with a beach restaurant.
- Central Beach is the heart of the town, with boat launches for whale and dolphin trips.
Keurboomstrand
Best for: a long beach and a gentle lagoon
East of Plett, Keurboomstrand has a sheltered bay, the famous Enrico beach restaurant and, at its western end, the Keurbooms River lagoon for calm swimming and paddling.
Nature's Valley
Best for: getting away from everyone
A village in the forest at the edge of Tsitsikamma, with a lagoon for swimming, a long wild beach and a Blue Flag. It is also the end point of the Otter Trail. One of the most peaceful places on the whole coast.
