The short answer

Wilderness is a small seaside village on South Africa's Garden Route, about 10 km east of George and 440 km east of Cape Town. It sits where the Touw River meets the Indian Ocean, surrounded by the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park, a chain of coastal lakes and one of the longest open beaches on the route. It is best for travellers who want nature, walking, paddling and paragliding without the crowds of Knysna or Plettenberg Bay.

Most people meet Wilderness from the N2. The highway drops down the Kaaimans River Pass, crosses the gorge, swings around a headland and suddenly the whole coast opens up: a lagoon on the left, a long white beach on the right, forest climbing the hills behind. Many drivers pull over at Dolphin Point to take a photo and then carry on to Knysna.

They miss the best part. Wilderness is not a town you see from the car. It is a place you walk into, paddle up, and look down on from above.

Where is Wilderness?

Wilderness lies on the Garden Route in South Africa's Western Cape, roughly halfway between Cape Town and Gqeberha. George, the region's main town and airport, is about 10 km to the west. Sedgefield is 23 km east and Knysna about 47 km east.

The village itself is small. According to the 2011 census about 6,000 people live in the wider Wilderness area, which stretches from the Kaaimans River in the west to the lakes around Hoekwil and Swartvlei in the east. Afrikaans is the most common home language, followed by English and isiXhosa.

The setting is what makes it. Behind the village rise the Outeniqua Mountains. In front lies the Indian Ocean. In between sits a system of rivers, estuaries and lakes that is protected as part of the Garden Route National Park and listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

A short history

The name comes from a farm. In 1877 George Bennet, a Liverpool man, bought land at the mouth of the Touw River and called it The Wilderness. He and his wife Henriëtta built the first houses, and for decades the place stayed an isolated beauty spot that you reached on horseback or by ox wagon.

Long before that, this coast belonged to the San and later the Khoikhoi. Their shell middens and caves are still found along the shore, and the name of the mountains, Outeniqua, is usually translated as "they who bear honey".

The railway arrived in 1928 with the Kaaimans River bridge, and the national road followed in the middle of the twentieth century. Since 2022 the old rail bridge has been a provincial heritage site, and in 2026 a new operator started clearing the line to bring the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam train back.

Wilderness Beach

The beach is the reason most people stop. It runs for kilometres east of the Touw River mouth, wide, golden and backed by dunes, with almost nothing built on the sand itself. In June 2026 it was named on the international Corona Beach 100 list of the world's best beaches, alongside Camps Bay, Boulders and Kraalbaai.

Two things to know before you swim:

  • The surf is powerful and rip currents are common. The local tourism office warns about them on every map it prints. Swim only where you can see lifeguards in season, and stay in your depth.
  • The water is cooler than it looks. Expect 20 to 21 °C from January to March and around 16 to 17 °C in winter.

For calmer water, walk to the lagoon at the Touw River mouth, where families swim and paddle on the flat side of the sandbank. For more on the coast, see our guide to the best beaches on the Garden Route.

The national park and the lakes

The Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park covers the rivers and lakes that make this area so green. It is the easiest part of the park to explore without a guide, and it is where most of our guests spend at least one morning.

Kayak to the waterfall

The classic Wilderness half day: hire a kayak at the Touw River, paddle about 40 minutes upstream through forest, tie up the boat and walk the boardwalk to a waterfall and rock pools. Our full guide covers routes, prices and timing: Kayak to the waterfall.

The kingfisher trails

The park names its walks after the five kingfishers found here: brown-hooded, malachite, giant, pied and half-collared. The Half-collared Kingfisher Trail (7 to 8 km return, about three hours) follows the Touw River through forest to the same waterfall. The Pied Kingfisher Trail (10 km) is flat, open and good for birding along the river and beach.

The lakes

East of the village lie Island Lake, Langvlei, Rondevlei and Swartvlei. They are quiet, reed-fringed and full of birds. The Rondevlei hide is one of the best free birding spots on the whole Garden Route: African fish eagles, purple swamphens, flamingos in some seasons and a long list of waders. Island Lake is popular for stand-up paddling, sailing and canoeing.

Above the village: the Map of Africa

Drive up the hill from Wilderness and you reach a viewpoint where the Kaaimans River loops through its gorge in a shape that looks, from above, exactly like the African continent. The Map of Africa is also one of South Africa's best-known paragliding launches. On a good afternoon you can watch pilots lift off the grass and soar the ridge for an hour above the beach. We wrote a separate guide to the viewpoint and how to get there, and another to paragliding on the Garden Route.

This ridge is also where we live. Ecoresort Wilderness sits right next door to the viewpoint.

Where to eat in Wilderness

Wilderness is a village, so the list is short but good:

  • Serendipity is the fine-dining address, run by chef Lizelle Stolze. Dinner only, Monday to Saturday, a set tasting menu of contemporary South African cooking beside the Touw River. Book ahead.
  • The Girls on the Square in the village has been serving prawns, Cajun calamari and generous seafood for years. Casual and consistently busy.
  • Ilali mixes pizza with more ambitious plates and a warm, wood-stove room in winter.
  • Joplin's Steak Bar at Pirate's Creek does one thing: steak, often with a fried egg on top, Portuguese style.
  • Salinas Beach Restaurant has the location: on the dunes above the beach, for calamari and a view.

When to visit Wilderness

The Garden Route has one of the mildest climates in South Africa. George, next door, averages 25 °C in February and around 19 °C in July, with rain spread through the year rather than a proper wet season.

Season Months What to expect
Summer Dec to Feb Warmest sea, long days, school holidays from mid-December to mid-January, busiest time of year
Autumn Mar to May Settled weather, warm sea into April, fewer people. Our favourite months
Winter Jun to Aug Cool nights, clear crisp days, whales offshore, lowest prices
Spring Sep to Nov Green hills, flowers, whales until November, some wind and rain in October and November

Our month-by-month guide has temperatures, sea temperatures and events.

How to get to Wilderness

  • By air: Fly to George Airport (GRJ). Airlink, FlySafair and CemAir connect George with Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and a few other cities. Wilderness is about 20 minutes away by car.
  • By car from Cape Town: About 440 km on the N2, five hours without stops. Many travellers take Route 62 inland one way and the coast the other.
  • Getting around: You need a car. There is no useful public transport, and the best places are a few kilometres apart.

Details, car hire tips and the Route 62 option are in how to get to Wilderness.

How long to stay

One night is enough to see Wilderness from the road. Three nights lets you paddle the Touw, walk a trail, spend an afternoon on the beach and watch the paragliders. Five or more turns it into a base: Knysna, Sedgefield, Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay are all comfortable day trips, and you come home each evening to the quietest stretch of the Garden Route.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, especially if you prefer nature to nightlife. Wilderness has an uncrowded beach, a national park with easy trails and paddling, some of the best birding on the Garden Route and a famous paragliding launch, all within a few kilometres.

How far is Wilderness from George?

About 10 km, or 12 to 15 minutes by car. George Airport is roughly 20 minutes away.

Can you swim at Wilderness Beach?

You can, but the surf is strong and rip currents are common. Swim near lifeguards in season and stay in your depth. The Touw River lagoon is calmer for children.
