Hidden gems in Wilderness: 12 places most visitors drive past
Most people see Wilderness at 80 km/h from the N2. These are the places you only find when you stop, walk and ask the people who live here.

Seven of these twelve are within ten minutes of our cottages.

In this guide
Wilderness has a way of hiding its best places in plain sight. The beach everyone photographs from Dolphin Point is only the front door. Behind it are lakes that birders cross continents for, forest older than most European cathedrals and a railway bridge that may soon carry a steam train again.
Here are twelve places we send our guests when they ask where the locals go.
1. Sunrise at the Map of Africa
Yes, it is on every list. But almost everyone comes at midday, when the light is flat and the gorge is hazy. Come at sunrise instead, when the mist lifts out of the Kaaimans gorge and the river loop appears in soft light. You will usually have it to yourself. How to get there.
2. Leentjiesklip
At the western end of Wilderness Beach, near the Touw River mouth, the rocks of Leentjiesklip break up the sand into small coves and rock pools. It is often empty outside the holidays. Explore at low tide and watch the swell; waves can wash over the rocks without warning.
3. Dolphin Point at dawn
The lay-by on the N2 above the Kaaimans River mouth is where every car stops for a photo. Few people come before breakfast, when the road is quiet, the beach is untouched and dolphins sometimes surf the backline. In whale season, scan the bay for spouts.

4. The Kaaimans River railway bridge
Built in 1928, the curved steel bridge across the Kaaimans River mouth carried freight and the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe until floods damaged the line in 2006. In 2022 it was declared a Western Cape provincial heritage site. Photograph it from the beach at the river mouth, or from Dolphin Point above. With the Choo Tjoe revival under way, the day a steam train crosses again will be a big one in Wilderness.
5. The lagoon boardwalk
A short boardwalk follows the Wilderness lagoon from the village towards the beach. It is flat, easy and beautiful in the evening, when the water turns gold and the kingfishers are busy.
6. The Rondevlei bird hide
The single most underrated place in Wilderness. The hide looks out over a reed-fringed lake in the Wilderness section of the national park, with African fish eagles, purple swamphens, grebes, herons and, in some seasons, flamingos. BirdLife South Africa rates it one of the best birding spots in the area. Bring binoculars and patience.
7. The Half-collared Kingfisher Trail
Most people paddle to the Touw River waterfall. Fewer walk there. This 7 to 8 km trail starts near the Ebb and Flow rest camp, crosses the river on a hand-pulled pontoon and follows the water through forest to the falls. It reopened in July 2026 after storm damage. You might see the small, shy half-collared kingfisher it is named after. More in our Touw River guide.

8. The Woodville Big Tree
Twenty minutes inland, near Hoekwil, a short forest loop leads to an Outeniqua yellowwood that is thought to be about 800 years old and stands 33 m tall. There is a picnic spot at the start. It is one of those places that makes you whisper.
9. Timberlake Organic Village
Between Wilderness and Sedgefield on the N2, Timberlake is a cluster of small shops, cafés, a farm stall and outdoor activities. Good coffee, organic groceries and a relaxed place to stop on the way to Sedgefield or Knysna.
10. Flat Rock and the Sixth Avenue boardwalk
Two of the smaller viewpoints on the official Wilderness map, and much quieter than Dolphin Point. The Sixth Avenue boardwalk leads down to the beach; Flat Rock is a rocky spot on the shore that is good for sunset.
11. Victoria Bay's tidal pool
Fifteen minutes west of Wilderness, Victoria Bay is famous among surfers for its right-hand point break. The hidden gem is on the other side of the cove: a tidal pool and a short promenade of old beach houses that look as if nothing has changed in fifty years.
12. The Seven Passes Road
The old wagon road between George and Knysna runs inland of the N2, through Hoekwil and past the Wilderness lakes, crossing seven river gorges on narrow bridges. It was built by Thomas Bain and Adam de Smidt and finished in 1883. Partly gravel, very slow and much more beautiful than the highway. Read the mountain passes guide.
A few local rules
- Respect the rips. Wilderness Beach has strong currents. Swim near lifeguards or not at all.
- No dogs in the national park. Trails in the Wilderness section do not allow dogs.
- Monkeys are wild. Vervet monkeys are clever and quick. Do not feed them, and do not leave food in open cars.
- Walk in daylight and let someone know your route on longer trails.
